Binary is a pair of ink drawings made during Fielden’s 2018 residency at Art Omi, New York. Each work consists of a sparse field in which two small circular ink forms are held in relation across the surface. The drawings establish a simple binary structure: two points, separated yet connected through the space between them. The works attend to the distance that defines this relation, where proximity and separation are held in tension. This configuration anticipates Fielden’s two-person performative works in which these relational structures are further developed, including We are two molecules floating together in space and our distance is infinite… then the sound of birds, both developed during the same residency.
