A Diminishing Force
2019, video performance with marble and ferrite magnet, two-channel digital video, colour, sound, 9:16, 10 min 30 sec, edition of 3 + 1 AP.
A Diminishing Force is a two-channel video performance in which rectangular blocks of white marble and black ferrite are broken simultaneously through repeated strikes with a hammer. Working in parallel, the two materials are subjected to the same action, gradually shifting from solid form into fragmented matter.
The work unfolds through a sustained, rhythmic process of breaking, carried out through the repeated movement of the body. Each strike produces both resistance and release, as the materials fracture, disperse and accumulate. Marble, long associated with classical sculpture, monumentality and the endurance of idealised form, is reduced alongside ferrite, a material defined by its magnetic force. Through this process, different conceptions of force—historical, political, material and physical—are brought into relation, mediated through the force of the body.
As the action continues, the rectilinear forms collapse into irregular fields of rubble. What begins as structured mass becomes particulate, approaching dust. The work traces this movement from solidity to dispersion, where making and unmaking occur simultaneously and the stability of form gives way to an open, unresolved condition.
